You think that Saudi abuse and American abuse should be kept in entirely separate spheres. I (and, I assume, Feministe) believe that while we're on the subject of domestic abuse, we might as well cover all our bases. More than anything else, it's a case of argumentative strategy. Hopefully we can agree that it doesn't justify the type of supercharged rhetoric that's been attached to it.David Schraubhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04946653376744012423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11306845.post-1129231494658604992005-10-13T15:24:00.000-04:002005-10-13T15:24:00.000-04:00You know, Cathy, whenever I feel like there simply...You know, Cathy, whenever I feel like there simply is no logic or rationality left in American public discourse, I stop by your blog. A always leave refreshed and with a little more hope than before.

There probably is no better example of hysteria in our country than the current DV environment. The idea that people ranting about "The Patriarchy" in Western culture and suggesting DV is an expression of TP's oppression and control is just mind numbing.

You are very correct that chivalry in Western culture has more than offset a history of male privilege (privilege which was not ubiquitous among men, by the way).

Ironically, and sadly, I see evidence that chivalry is converting to contempt. Because they are constantly under attack and threat, men are learning to protect themselves before they sacrifice for a woman.Iguanahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17433833187303202181noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11306845.post-1129153016411403292005-10-12T17:36:00.000-04:002005-10-12T17:36:00.000-04:00The rejoinder is up on my site. The rejoinder is up on my site.David Schraubhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04946653376744012423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11306845.post-1129142272867931322005-10-12T14:37:00.000-04:002005-10-12T14:37:00.000-04:00Well said. Feministe's rebuke to those who might ...Well said. Feministe's rebuke to those who might feel superior to the Saudi system is misguided. The other side of an argument, or the other point of comparison, in, say, a study of institutional sexism in the US versus SA is not an "other." In theory, an "other" is a construct of the subconscious that denies real facts such as real laws and customs. We can certainly condemn these Saudi practices; they are real. Feministe has constructed an "other" herself of people she imagines wrongly as very different intrinsically from herself. That's bigotry.PatCAhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08920623662477828662noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11306845.post-1129127787409983232005-10-12T10:36:00.000-04:002005-10-12T10:36:00.000-04:00Cathy,Great post. However, it is standard lefty boilerplate:

-The U.S. and all other nations should sign CEDAW and actually follow it.

-There should be a substantive effort to improve pay and conditions in “pink-collar” jobs, so that low-wage female workers will not have to depend on abusive partners for support.

-Aid for women with dependant children should be adequate for their independant survival, again so that women will not have to dependent on abusive partners for economic support.

-At a deeper cultural level, I hope that all those things which eroticize and endorse violence against women will eventually disappear—down to the smallest things, like the juxtaposition of an attractive underwear-clad woman and a bloody, violent death in horror movies. Until then, I hope people will take it upon themselves to avoid these things.

-More funding to domestic violence shelters, and greater outreach to non-English-speaking communities

These are all separate arguments, but it does indicate the predictable stances of the American feminist movement - Money solves all.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11306845.post-1129095958999112362005-10-12T01:45:00.000-04:002005-10-12T01:45:00.000-04:00Thanks for the comments, everyone. I get so tired of hearing people on the left say, "Well, of course the US isn't Saudi Arabia..." and then add what I think Lileks calls "the damning 'but.'" The US isn't Saudi Arabia. Period. Are there still gender issues and disparities in modern US society? Yes. But a comparison between the two is patently absurd.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
